Move over, Astros and Rockets—Houston’s new mascot might be scurrying its way into the spotlight. Officials have proposed adopting the city’s unkillable cockroaches as an official symbol of resilience.

“They’re tough, adaptable, and survive literally everything,” said an official at a press conference. “If that doesn’t scream Houston, I don’t know what does.”
The proposed mascot, “Carl the Cockroach,” would represent Houston’s ability to bounce back from hurricanes, gridlock, and whatever other mess there is. Designs feature Carl wearing a cowboy hat, holding a bottle of hot sauce, and dodging a size 12 boot.
Critics are skeptical. “Cockroaches? Really?” said one local. “Couldn’t we just stick with the Bayou City nickname and call it a day?”
But many Houstonians are embracing the idea. “I see more roaches than armadillos anyway,” said resident Linda Creeper. “At least they’re realistic.”
The city plans to hold a vote on Carl’s future, though most agree he’s already harder to get rid of than Houston traffic.
